In a clinical trial to see if hair loss might improve male pattern baldness, scientists at the University of California, San Francisco found that a daily dose of finasteride — marketed as Propecia — might be able to slow down or reverse the progression of hair loss.
The results were published on Monday in the journalNature Agingthat found that the daily treatment of finasteride — usually taken for a few months before regaining hair — could help slow or even reverse hair loss and promote new hair growth.
The study, called a phase 2 trial, found that finasteride — the active ingredient in Propecia — was able to regrow hair in 86% of men who took the drug.
"Our results are very encouraging and important," said Dr. Emily Thompson, a clinical assistant professor of dermatology at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, and director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in Bethesda, Md.
Researchers started noticing a difference with finasteride for hair loss around the time of hair loss in the 1990s, when they noticed that it lowered the rate of hair growth in men. In women, the effect was more noticeable in those who took the drug. But it was not clear whether this was due to the drug’s more potent form of finasteride or to a different mechanism of action.
Because of the drug’s long half-life, the drug can have a more prolonged effect. The study followed 17,000 men between the ages of 18 and 41 who had a history of male pattern baldness and had a hairline of about 50 millimeters or less in the frontal and vertex areas.
While the study found no evidence of hair loss on their own, the findings suggest that finasteride could be beneficial in slowing down or even reversing hair loss.
The results were published inbycience.com. The study’s author is Dr. Emily Thompson, a clinical assistant professor of dermatology at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center and director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
Dr. Thompson said that hair loss can be caused by a variety of factors, including genetics, hormones, dietary habits, stress, and nutritional deficiencies.
For instance, finasteride, the active ingredient in Propecia, is converted to its active form, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), by the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, in the body. DHT is responsible for the miniaturization of hair follicles, and has the capacity to affect the hair growth cycle.
Researchers found that a daily dose of finasteride — usually taken for a few months before regaining hair — could slow or even reverse hair loss and promote new hair growth.
The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health and the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, a biotechnology company that makes finasteride.

“We are glad to see that it is getting to be a reality,” Dr. Thompson said. “In a clinical trial, we will be able to see if it works for those who are already experiencing hair loss.”
